Britten Oboe Quartet

Hellens, in collaboration with Espressivo Concerts, is delighted to have engaged the wonderful Britten Oboe Quartet to give a concert in Hellens Great Barn.

The combination of the oboe with a string trio was a creation of Mozart’s genius. Nicholas Daniel (oboe) founded the Britten Oboe Quartet with co-principals of the award-winning Britten Sinfonia; they all bring to this ensemble not only the highest musical standards but also the experience of playing together over many years. resulting in warm, expressive and above all enjoyable playing.

Nicholas Daniel OBE, has long been acknowledged as one of the world’s great woodwind players. He is joined by three distinguished string players, Jacqueline Shave (violin), Clare Finnimore (viola) and Caroline Dearnley (cello). Nicholas came to the public’s attention when, in 1980, he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. He was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List last year for his services to music. The programme is still evolving but is likely to include the Mozart Oboe Quartet in F K370, an arrangement of a string quartet by Mozart or Schubert and, possibly, the Cor Anglais Quartet by Jean Françaix.

‘… performances throughout are simply beyond reproach in their keenly communicative instinct, deft aplomb and infectious dedication.’ Classical Ear

Jenkinson Frith Duo (Cello & piano)

Jenkinson Frith Duo (Cello & piano)

In another Hellens/Espressivo collaboration, the superb Jenkinson Frith Duo
– Richard Jenkinson (cello) and Benjamin Frith (piano) – is scheduled to give a concert in Hellens Great Barn on the afternoon of Saturday 20th November. A member of the Dante Quartet and former Principal Cello of the CBSO, Richard is one of Britain’s most outstanding cellists, a quite exceptional musician who brings out every facet of the cello’s incredible range of colours and emotions. Benjamin is an internationally-acclaimed pianist who has appeared with many of the world’s finest orchestras but who, here, with Richard, explores his love of chamber music. He is a member of the celebrated Gould Piano Trio. The planned programme comprises three great cello sonatas, Kodaly’s Cello Sonata Op 4, Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No 3 in A Op 69 and Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata in G minor Op 19. Further details and ticket arrangements will be advertised as soon as it is clear whether Covid regulations will allow the concert to go ahead and, if so, what form it will take and what precautions will need to be put in place.
